North Bengal Medical College was originally envisioned by Dr. Bidhan Chandra Roy, Ex-Chief Minister of West Bengal. North Bengal University Medical College (NBUMC), now known as North Bengal Medical College (NBMC) came up on paper (not on ground) by the act of an advertisement in the Anandabazar Patrika in August 1967 for admission to first Premedical course of this institute by North Bengal University (NBU). Premedical course was abolished after 1976. First batch of students for premedical course was admitted as per merit list of Higher Secondary examination. Class for 1st batch consisting of 46 boys and 6 girls was started on 6.11.67 on makeshift arrangement at Jackson medical school, Jalpaiguri. Students at that time were accommodated at Jalpaiguri Polytechnic School. Due to some queer, unexplainable, inconsistent, anomalous reasons as many as 35 students could not pass premedical testing the 1st attempt. They lost one year in the beginning but did not loose their heart. It was an unfortunate incident. Many have been very successful later on in their respective fields.
2nd to 6th batch of students undertook their premedical course at Raigunj University College. Again they were accommodated in hotels and rented house in different years on temporary basis and they did not have their own premises. Those students had to pass their time under torrid conditions and inimical environment. 7th batch onward started their premedical course at NBMC campus, Sushrutnagar, their own place. Classes for 1st year MBBS course (semester system was introduced much later) for 1st batch started on 18.11.68 in NBU campus at Raja Rammohonpur (not at Sushrutnagar) again on makeshift basis. First 4 batches started their academic journey in academic building of NBU and not at NBMC. Life was difficult and turbulent due to simple fact that they had to live a kind of parasitic life in a land not of their own.
First MBBS academic session started under the stewardship of Prof.Subir Majumdar and Dr. Chittaranjan Roy, Deptt. of Physiology, Dr.Mohit Kr.Das, Dr. Ramendu Das and Dr.(Mrs) Sandhya Majumdar – all of Deptt. Of Anatomy. Dr. Sasadhar Biswas joined NBUMC in 1969 as Professor and HOD, Deptt. Of Anatomy and Professor-in-charge of NBUMC. Prof. Ajit Kr. Duttagupta joined as 1st official Principal of NBUMC. MBBS classes (barring premedical) started in Sushrutnagar, the present site of NBMC in 1972 and from 5th batch onward started their educational career on their own land. First 4 batches were admitted on the basis of marks of H.S.Exam . First admission test in West Bengal for medical curriculum was held in 1971which was followed from next year everywhere in W.B. Clinical courses were initially decided to be started at Siliguri Sub divisional Hospital. with bed strength of 28 beds only at that time. Students at that time resented and opposed the decision tooth and nail because of lack of facilities of teaching therein. So as an alternative measure due to the students' resistance first 5 batches had to migrate to SSKM hospital for their clinical lessons. First 2 batches completed internship and housemanship there. NBUMC was rechristened in AUG 1978 to North Bengal Medical College & Hospital (after dropping the middle letter) and the administrative control went from NB University to Govt.of W.B.
